Licensed to preach at conference in Greene County, TN. (letter from United Methodist Archives in possession of R. W. Conn, Antioch, TN). William Conn attended 1822 Methodist General Conference at Ebenezer near Greenville, Tn. (History of Tennessee Conference, Cullen T. Carter )

1823
Admitted on Trial, appointed to Obion (Forked Deer District) (Letter, see above) Wm. Conn of Methodist Episcopal Church believed by Uncle Reuben Edmonston that first organized society in County was that of Methodist Episcopal Church at his father's house on North Fork of the Obion in 1823. (Goodspeed's History of Weakley County)

Weakley Remembered Volume 3, compiled by Pansy Nanney Baker and Charlotte Stout Reynolds. pg. 1.

The first church erected in the county was a Methodist, on Mud Creek, where Mt. Vernon now is, about the year 1826. It was a log house 20 x 24, and served also as a school house.

The first preachers here were the Rev. William Conn and William Mullins. Name of the first school teacher is not remembered. The Methodists established the first camp-ground (Cook's) about 13 miles northeast from Dresden in 1823. The Rev. Robert Paine (now Senior Bishop of the M.E. Church, South) was the Presiding Elder, and the Revs. Conn and Mullins, Circuit riders.

Paint Rock (Huntsville District) (Letter, see above) History of Jackson County, John Robert Kennamer pg. 77. The Methodist Church In Religious matters, the Methodists and Baptists have been keen rivals in the work of spreading their doctrines among the common people. With the organization of the Methodist Society, a central governing body made up of the bishops, a definite policy could be carried to the frontier settlements.

Anson Wes, Methodist historian said: "The Jackson Circuit was named for this county." It was in the Tennessee District in the Tennessee Conference. "For 1822, Elias Tidwell and Richard Neely were appointed to Jackson, and they reported at the end of the year to the Annual Conference, 231 white members under their jurisdiction.

Thomas A. Young and Greenberry Garrett were assigned to Jackson circuit for 1823 -- members, 314 white, 22 colored members in the circuit.

There was a Paint Rock Circuit organized in 1824 and continued only three years. pg 136. Paint Rock Valley is in the western part of Jackson County and extends from the town of Paint Rock to the Tennessee State Line. The Paint Rock River is formed by the junction of the Hurricane and Estill's Creeks, and a little lower down is Larkin's Creek. (Lists many of the early settler's names but no Conns.)

pg 157. John Kennamer owned most of the land upon which the town of Camden, now Paint Rock, was built. Camden Post Office was established in 1836.In 1847, the name of the office was changed to Redman. The name was changed back to Camden in the 1850's. The name Camden was changed to Paint Rock in 1876.

History of Methodism in Alabama and West Florida, Marion Eliaz Lazenby.

pg 159 During 1818, the churches in Alabama were districts in other Annual Conferences, since there was no Alabama Conference. The only charge at the beginning of that year in North Alabama was the Flint River Circuit, in the Nashville District of the Tennessee Conference. But during 1818 several new circuits were formed in Alabama and at the Tennessee Conference Oct1, 1818, a new Tennessee District (afterwards the Tennessee River District) was formed consisting of seven circuits--Flint River, Cotaco, Limestone, Cahawba, Tuscaloosa, Shoal, And Buttahatchee (afterwards the Marion County Circuit. For 1822, Tennessee River District was given an new presiding elder, Wm. McMahon. The newly formed Jackson Circuit was added, as was Huntsville Station. For 1823, the Tennessee Conference formed a new Huntsville District, with Wm. McMahon as presiding elder. It contained some Tennessee appointments, but the Alabama Appointments in this district were the Madison, Limestone, Jackson and Paint Rock Circuits and Huntsville Station. Another new Tennessee District for this year was the Forked Deer District with Lewis Garrett as presiding elder. The Alabama charges in this district were the Florence and th Shoal Circuits.

The new presiding elder for the Forked Deer District for 1824 was Robert Paine, and the two Alabama Circuits within its bounds were the Shoal and the Cypress Circuits.
